KCBS-AM (740) will cancel all its call-in shows as of Nov. 1 and return to an all-news format it hasn't had for over a decade, the station announced Tuesday. Being dropped are "The KCBS Kitchen" with Harvey Steiman, "Call For Action" with Barbara Kaufman, "Narsai & Co." with Narsai David, "Nightbeat with Art Finley" and "Overnight with Barbara Simpson," all of which air during the week.
Among the weekend shows being axed are "The CBS Saturday Kitchen," "On the House with the Carey Brothers," "Real Estate News with Brian Banmiller" and "Sportsbeat."
The station's local and network baseball, basketball and football broadcasts will not be affected.
Station vice president and general manager Frank Oxarart said KCBS is completing the best year in its history and its best month ever in October and wants to keep up its success. "The time to change is when you're winning," he said.
Simpson and Finley both said the move caught them by surprise. "I'd like very much to stay in the area," Simpson said, "But if one of those 'I can't say no' jobs comes along . . ."
