Ken Sharp, whose name will be familiar to readers of Beatlefan, Goldmine and other music publications, is the author of "Starting Over: The Making of Double Fantasy," to be published Oct. 19 by Simon & Schuster/MTV Books.

Sharp told us by email the book will be an oral history of the album told by the key principals involved. It will include new interviews with Yoko Ono, producer David Geffen, Jack Douglas, the session band, Rick Nielsen and Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick, engineers, record company personnel, photographers, including Annie Leibovitz and Bob Gruen, and members of the media who interviewed John and Yoko during their rounds to publicize the album.

The book will also feature photos and essays by David M. Spindel and Roger Farrington, who were there for the first day of the recording sessions. It will serve as a nice compliment to the release of the Lennon remasters and the celebrations of his 70th birthday.

REVIEW: After 'Who Is Harry Nilsson?', viewers will know what the talk is about
October 25th, 2010 6:33 pm ET

If you've ever been charmed in even a small way by the music of Harry Nilsson, run, don't walk, and pick up the DVD "Who Is Harry Nilsson (and Why Is Everybody Talking About Him?"), which hits the streets Tuesday. It is a fantastic tribute to a man whose music still stands out after all these years.

Director John Scheinfeld does it perfectly, gathering together all the right people to talk about him. Of course, there's Una, his widow, and Diane, his second wife, and his children. There are freshly filmed interviews with Yoko Ono, the Smothers Brothers, Randy Newman (who Nilsson paid a huge tribute to by doing an entire album of his songs), Van Dyke Parks, Brian Wilson, Micky Dolenz, May Pang, Gerry Beckley, Pythons Eric Idle and Terry Gilliam, Jimmy Webb and Paul Williams, plus there is vintage footage of John Lennon and Ringo Starr.

The memories are wonderful. The Smothers Brothers recall the infamous incident at the Troubadour when Nilsson and John Lennon got tossed out of the club. Micky Dolenz recalls what a partier Nilsson was. Randy Newman and Van Dyke Parks talks about his work as a songwriter. And there's a ton of his glorious music. The DVD also comes with over 90 minutes of bonus features, including extended interviews and deleted scenes.

Harry's final years, his campaign for gun control laws after the death of John Lennon and his decline are mentioned, though much more time is spent on his good times rather than the bad. The story ends sadly with his passing, but his music lives on, as will this wonderful documentary that's as charming as the music he left behind.

McCartney's first concert night in Philly is a wild one!

Paul McCartney performs in Philadelphia

Here's a report on the first night in Philadelphia with words and pictures from Bob Gannon:

"Well folks, the Philly crowd has traditionally been some of the most wild audiences when Paul is playing and this night was no different. Band & crowd were high octane.

"Setlist wise there is nothing much to report but two story lines that are worth sharing was after playing "Yesterday", Paul called up a woman from the front row who had held up a sign that said "I am a breast cancer survivor." The rest although I'm sure of the exact wording was that she wanted Macca to sign her so that she could get a tattoo . So she came up and Paul signed her lower back.

"Right after that, he called up a young girl from the front row. You may remember her story as she is the girl who is handicapped and her parents were trying to get good seats for her to see her hero but that the Wachovia Center was only willing to supply them with seats further away from the stage despite them paying for the expensive tickets. Once the story hit the news, I believe Paul's people stepped in and she did get her front row seat!! So she was carried on stage by Brian Riddle and placed back in her wheelchair where she came on stage.

"Paul walked over and met her on Rusty's side and gave her a big hug to the joy and jubilation of the crowd. Paul then walked back to his mic and summoned her over to say "hello to Philadelphia". He held the mic down for her as she gave a robust "Hello Philadelphia" which was met with an earth shattering cheer from the crowd.

"Paul and band were smiling ear to ear and this has definitely been a tour with filled dreams come true for numerous fans. Paul then signed around five things after the last song."

BRIAN RAY TO VISIT CAMP McCARTNEY: Paul McCartney guitarist Brian Ray will visit Andre Gardner's Camp McCartney in Philadelphia outside the city's Wells Fargo Center, the site of Saturday and Sunday's two Paul McCartney concerts, at about 3 p.m. ET today. "He'll be on live with me at around 3:20 p.m. ET, and we're also going to pre-tape a more in-depth interview to air tomorrow morning at around 8:05 a.m. on "Breakfast With The Beatles," Gardner told us. Camp McCartney, which is collecting can goods to be donated to those in need, is located right by Fan Gear on the Broad Street side of the Wells Fargo Center. Good work, Andre!

INSTANT CONCERN: Those track listings we posted for the John Lennon remasters box sets from HMV in Japan were not released by EMI and have caused some concern within EMI. We're told, however, they are correct.

REMEMBERING WINGS: We published the conclusion of our interview with Denny Seiwell yesterday. Thanks to Denny and Mark Lapidos of the Fest for helping make that happen. We hope you enjoyed it.

THE BEATLES IN CLEVELAND: On this date in 1966, the Beatles concert in Cleveland was interrupted for half an hour when 2,500 fans stormed the field. The YouTube clip below features Dave Schwensen, author of "The Beatles in Cleveland," talking about the group's two shows there in '64 and '66. The clip includes some rare footage, too.

Paul McCartney Fenway Park report #1: Soundcheck setlist!
Here are some pictures and a detailed report on the Philadelphia soundcheck from Bob Gannon (thanks again, Bob!!):

"Long day and I'll let out the soundcheck report before going to bed. Paul was late flying in from New York and soundcheck was about an hour late. While waiting for Paul, Wix came walking in and addressed the soundcheck group. He wound up signing autographs and posing for quite a few people before excusing himself to "go to work". After waiting some more, Paul finally walked in. Soundcheck was awesome, great sound!! Here's what was played:

01. Instrumental Jam/ Jet instrumental without Paul
02. Honey Hush
03. Honey Don't
04. Philadelphia Jam
05. Flaming Pie
06. Magical Mystery Tour with some extra work on the ending
07. Penny Lane
08. Celebration
09. I'm in love again
10. C Moon
11. I want to (come home)
12. Midnight Special
13. Calico Skies
14. Every Night
15. Sun is Shining
16. Pavlova (not kachina)
17. Dance Tonight
18. I'm leaning on a lamp post
19. Ram On
20. Yesterday
21. Suicide
22. You never Give me your money (instrumental-partial)
23. Massage bit
24. Lady madonna

"A few notes on soundcheck. "Sun is Shining" sounded absolutely amazing. I think it should be added to the show and was one of the many songs requested by soundcheckers.. Then came "Leaning on the lamp post" and "Ram On". Then later, the best request of the night....."Suicide" which Paul answered the guy with "Interesting man" and then went right into "Suicide" "Lamp post" was almost completely done but it was the most that I've seen him do of it. At the end of soundcheck, a father & son were called up to the stage where Paul signed their T-Shirts and the sign that they had been holding up. We then broke for dinner and the people waiting outside to get in were finally allowed to enter the arena."

Bob (can't believe that he heard "suicide" live tonight!!!!!!

Two historic Beatle artifacts to be auctioned off today in the UK (Examiner.com/Beatles Examiner August 15th, 2010 9:25 am)

 Beatles Examiner (Aug. 15, 2010)

Two items that figure in Beatle history are to be sold today in the Pioneers of Popular Culture.
One is the piece of the Cavern stage pictured here and in the slideshow below.

It includes the card that reads "From The Cavern - Liverpool ''The Birthplace Of The Beatles'' Comes This Genuine Piece Of The Cavern Club Stage On Which The Beatles Performed 292 Times During The Period 1961 To 1963."

The item description reads "In September 1964, the Cavern played host to a five-day music event as part of Liverpool's 'Freedom From Hunger' campaign. To help fund-raising, sections of the old stage, which had just been refurbished by owner Ray McFall, were sold as souvenirs. The
demand for these 'Beatleboards', as they were called, was worldwide." You can find the auction site here.

It's worth is estimated at £450 - 550, € 530 - 650. (Roughly $701.4 - $857.3 U.S. Dollars.)

Bonham's is also auctioning a Challen piano used in Beatles and other recordings at Abbey Road Studios. As we wrote earlier, the item was housed in Studio Three. Not one, but two Challens were part of the Beatles' time at Abbey Road Studios.

The piano was used for "Paperback Writer," "Tomorrow Never Knows," "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" and "Old Brown Shoe." It's also believed it was used for the Pink Floyd albums "Wish You Were Here" and "Dark Side of the Moon." Bonhams estimates its worth at £100,000 – £150,000 (roughly $152,700-$229,000).
